Lagrangian Coherent Structures and Vortex Formation in High Spatiotemporal‐Resolution Satellite Winds of an Atmospheric Kármán Vortex Street

Recent advances in geostationary imaging have enabled the derivation of high spatiotemporal-resolution cloud-motion winds for study mesoscale unsteady flows. Due to general absence ground truth, quality assessment satellite is challenging. In current limited practice, straightforward plausibility checks on smoothness retrieved wind field or tests aggregated trends such as mean velocity components are applied control. this study, we demonstrate additional diagnostic tools based feature extraction from field. Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS), vortices and transport barriers, guide constrain emergence cloud patterns. Evaluating alignment extracted LCS with observed patterns can potentially serve a test adequately explain time-dependent dynamics. We discuss suitability expressiveness direct, geometry-based, texture-based, feature-based flow visualization methods through real-world example an atmospheric Kármán vortex street its laboratory archetype, 2D cylinder flow.
